Deuteronomy 5:16 (KJV) Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
When reading this passage, it is easy for us to project this onto the younger generation without taking into consideration that God is also speaking to us as well. We become so busy with our own lives (I am guilty as well) that everything else becomes secondary or even borderline unimportant. However, God never intended for our relationship with our parents to become one of them.
Although we are adults, we are still going to be held accountable for how we treat our parents. We will also be held accountable for teaching our children the same lesson. We set the stage for how our children will interact with us based upon the example we demonstrate to them. We teach them how to respect us by demonstrating our respect for our parents.
Honoring our earthly parents is a Biblical command that teaches us how to honor our Heavenly Father.
As our parents begin to age, they may not be able to move around or think as sharply as they once did. We are still required to show deference to them in love and with respect because they are the earthly representation of our spiritual relationship with our Heavenly Father. In essence, to be disrespectful to them is to show disrespect to God.
So let us keep this one thought in mind when we interact with our parents: they are not perfect, but they are doing the very best they can with the human limitations they have been granted…
