How Did We Get Here?: A Kingdom Online Commentary

Joshua 7:10-11 (KJV) And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them…

Truth is truth and facts are facts, regardless of how we may attempt to spin it in our favor. Similarly, right is right and wrong is wrong. There are no gray areas and it is not relative, contrary to popular opinion. If such were the case then there would never be any justice for criminal activity. There would never be any reason to confess any sin or violation of any lawful command.

Understanding The Text

In the preceding verses to our Scriptural text for today, Joshua was confused as to the reason Israel lost the battle after securing the victory at Jericho and began to intercede on Israel’s behalf. God responds to Joshua by saying,

…Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you…” (Josh. 7:10-12).

God explains to Joshua that the reason Israel lost the battle to Ai was the result of blatant disregard and disobedience to His command at Jericho. In other words, God was saying to Joshua that He is not going to bless Israel’s mess.

Once we are honest with God, each other, and ourselves, we will be able to begin on the path of healing and reconciliation.

Why Is This Important To Us?

How does this apply to our contemporary context? Within our nation, we are currently dealing with a violation of what Jesus proclaimed were the two greatest commandments: a love for God and a love for our neighbor. Drifting away from these two life principles has caused the current climate of our nation. The truth of the matter is that it did not happen overnight. It was a gradual decline over time.

Consequently, we cannot expect God to be present in the midst of anything that is in direct violation of His Word. This would be a direct violation of His character and nature. It would negate His sovereign right to dispense justice for acts of sin and disobedience. It would bring an even greater imbalance to all of creation because God’s holy nature does not allow him to mete out love and mercy alone. There has to be some form of consequence in the form of correction and discipline. Otherwise, people would live recklessly without any regard for the rights of others, including the exclusive rights belonging to God.

The truth is this…we cannot live any way we choose without the expectation of a consequence. The fact is this…God will not allow us to live any way we choose without the implementation of a consequence. Once we acknowledge, understand and accept this truth and fact, the clearer our perspective will be.
