Lest We Forget (Thoughts On Lifting Restrictions)

Joshua 7:2 (KJV) And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai…

I said that I would not provide any commentary on our current situation in the world because there were more than enough people speaking to it. However, it has been staying on my mind a lot after receiving the news that some state governors were going to begin removing restrictions. After achieving a few minor successes and maybe even winning a battle in which the victory is incomparable as a result of how it occurred, we often feel as though we can take on the world. The mistake in this type of thinking is that it often influences our next set of actions, which often results in our failure.

From the spiritual perspective, it becomes imperative for us to consult God on everything we do because He alone knows what lies ahead of us. We cannot devise a strategy that will be successful enough if we walk into the situation blindly. The result will be an increase in loss, possibly resources…maybe even our own lives. All of this because we did not wait for the word from the Lord. If only we had waited…

Understanding The Text

Today’s Scriptural text discusses how Israel decided to proceed into another battle based upon the words of a few whose confidence was on the borderline of arrogance. The result: Israel lost the battle because they retreated when they were overtaken by the defenders of Ai. How does this relate to us in the contemporary context? We soon forget that it is God Who is able to cause us to triumph in Christ over this pandemic (2 Cor. 2:14). God’s counsel means everything if we are going to live victoriously within our contemporary context.

It is easy to ignore the life lessons taught to us previously when we are blinded by our own selfish motives.

Why Is This Important For Us?

It is important for us because we can never presume to know how to proceed with our planning for the next stages of life apart from consulting God for His strategy. God’s strategy will always include a means of providing for the essential resources to secure the victory. There is no second-guessing because His way is always foolproof. At present, He has provided us with individuals who specialize in infectious diseases and understand the ramifications of moving too swiftly (and unadvisedly) in removing the restrictions which have been instrumental in slowing the advance of the pandemic. We must understand that by saying, “Not now”, it does not mean, “Not ever”.

So what is our plan for life after lifting the restrictions? Will we seek the Lord’s counsel and follow it wholeheartedly? Will we follow the counsel of the public health officials? Or will we presume to know what is best and take the risk of jeopardizing the safety of those dependent upon us and our own safety as well? One thing is certain: we will not like the end result of going at it alone. Trust God’s wisdom to lead us into victory. The results will be long-lasting.
